ELI challenge at EU Datathon 2018 (October 2018)

One of the challenges in this year's EU Datathon 2018 event organisation by the Publications Office featured the European Legislation Identifier project in cooperation with the ELI Taskforce.

The title of the challenge was: 'Make legislation interoperable with ELI'.

Out of 16 competing teams, the best four were invited to present their work at the live-event event on 2 October 2018. The finalist showed how business, academic, community and personal projects can be empowered by reusing ELI in combination with assets from the EU open data portal.

  • Lexparency (1st place) demonstrated how the process of navigating legal data is simplified and sped up with a user-friendly interface to search abstracts. It also showed how information queries can be facilitated displayed as infographs.
  • A model for a user-friendly, easily-manageable mobile app to search legislation across national datasets was proposed by INCM (2nd place). The team showed a solution including visualisation tools and push notifications for mobile users.
  • LYNX (3rd place) presented an artificial intelligence scheme built on a legal knowledge graph for multilingual compliance, interconnected through an ecosystem of smart cloud services that can discover new links among data sources.
  • The LAWANNOTATIONS (4th place) did a live demonstration of a solution to annotate and automatically generate legal data sources and create law references as ELI resource locators based on German legislation.
